Your Guide to Passing the CPA Exam
July 10, 2025
Passing the CPA Exam is a major milestone—and you don’t have to go it alone. Whether you’re just getting started or deep in study mode, these tips from CPA candidates, review experts, and fellow students can help you cross the finish line.
1. Make a Study Plan—and Stick to It
Success starts with a solid schedule. Most candidates need 300–400 hours to prep for all four exam sections. That breaks down to about 20–25 hours per week for 2–3 months per section.
- Map your timeline: Factor in your work schedule, school commitments, and life events.
- Set specific goals: “I’ll study REG chapters 1–2 by Friday” is more effective than “study REG.”
- Pick your first section wisely: Many start with FAR or AUD to build momentum.
2. Understand the Exam Format
Each exam section (AUD, FAR, REG, and BEC*) includes multiple-choice questions (MCQs), task-based simulations (TBSs), and in some cases, written responses.
- Know how the exam is scored and structured.
- Practice under timed conditions.
- Familiarize yourself with the digital tools in the testing interface.
*Note: Beginning in 2024, BEC has been replaced with discipline sections under the CPA Evolution model.
3. Use the Right Materials
There’s no one-size-fits-all review program. Choose a course that matches your learning style—video lectures, bite-sized lessons, or guided study plans. Don’t forget:
- Discounted CPA Exam Review solutions for MTCPA Student members
- Free tools from the AICPA (sample tests, blueprints, and scoring info)
- Flashcards and mnemonics for quick review
- Realistic practice questions that mimic exam wording and format
4. Treat It Like a Job
Show up every day. Some tips:
- Find your best study time (early morning, lunch break, evening).
- Create a distraction-free zone (and actually use it).
- Block social media. Your future self will thank you.
5. Practice Smart
Don’t just read—engage. Answer questions, write out simulations, and review why you got things wrong.
- Focus on weak areas, but don’t ignore your strengths.
- Mix topics to mimic real exam flow.
- Review regularly to retain info long-term.
6. Stay Mentally Fit
This exam is a marathon. You’ll need rest, support, and breaks.
- Get sleep. Burnout = forgetting what you studied.
- Take breaks (yes, schedule them too).
- Talk to other candidates—online or in study groups. You’re not alone.
7. Know the Admin Side
- Apply early with the Montana Board of Public Accountants.
- Understand deadlines for each testing window.
- Schedule your exams in advance (especially during busy periods).
8. Don’t Fear Failing
Plenty of CPAs didn’t pass every section on the first try. What matters is how you bounce back.
- Learn from your mistakes.
- Adjust your study method if needed.
- Keep moving forward. You’ve got this.
