Out of Country Membership

International membership provides connection, resources, and presence

Build Your U.S. CPA Network from Abroad

The Montana Society of CPAs (MTCPA) is the professional association for Certified Public Accountants in the state of Montana. We provide education, professional support, and advocacy for CPAs and the accounting profession.

Please note that MTCPA is not the licensing authority for the state. Licensing and regulation of CPAs and CPA firms in Montana is handled by the Montana Board of Public Accountants, which is the state agency responsible for issuing CPA licenses and firm permits. MTCPA serves solely as the professional membership association representing Montana CPAs.

Benefits of becoming an international member of MTCPA

1. Professional alignment with U.S. standards

MTCPA membership signals that you are connected to:

  • U.S. GAAP, federal tax, and ethics standards
  • The broader AICPA/state-society ecosystem
  • A recognized U.S. professional body, even if you’re not Montana-based

For international practitioners, this is often about credibility and positioning, not geography.

2. Practical, affordable CPE

MTCPA, like many state societies, tends to emphasize:

  • Practitioner-focused CPE (less theory, more “what do I do now?”)
  • Federal tax, ethics, and accounting topics that apply anywhere
  • On-demand and webinar formats that work well internationally

For many international members, MTCPA CPE pricing alone can justify the dues.

3. Clear, plain-English regulatory updates

State societies often do an excellent job translating:

  • IRS and Treasury changes
  • AICPA guidance
  • FASB updates

into concise, actionable summaries. MTCPA’s communications are typically aimed at working practitioners, not just large-firm specialists.

4. A real network—not just a logo

Because MTCPA is a smaller, tight-knit society:

  • Members are more approachable
  • Leadership is more accessible
  • International members are more visible, not lost in the crowd

That can matter for referrals, collaboration, and professional recognition.

5. Build U.S. professional presence without needing to be physically local

6. Advocacy that still benefits international practitioners

Even if you’re not practicing in Montana:

  • MTCPA advocacy with the IRS and regulators helps improve clarity and administration overall

You benefit indirectly from better guidance, timelines, and practitioner support

To apply: You must first hold a certificate of membership with the Association of CPAs International (ACPAI) and/or active license in a US state to be an out-of-country member of MTCPA. Once approval by ACPAI, they will provide us your application for MTCPA membership.
